Caregiver Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)

This 2.5-hour workshop is designed for parents and caregivers of Autistic children of all ages who want to learn non-physical, supportive intervention strategies to increase safety and reduce risk of harm. Adapted from the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® (NVCI) training program offered through the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), this session will help participants recognize and respond early to signs of anxiety and/or distress, implement supportive verbal and non-verbal communication techniques and appropriate de-escalation strategies, and manage their emotional responses during challenging situations.

As a result of participating in this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • describe how to respond to various levels of crisis behaviours
  • recognize the importance of responding to crisis situations in a calm manner in order to influence a positive outcome
  • describe the decision-making-matrix when assessing risk behaviour
  • apply a framework to help guide caregivers and the individuals in distress through a process of re-establishing the relationship
