Peel Respite Services

What is Respite Care?
Respite care is a family support service that promotes active living and provides temporary relief from the physical and emotional demands involved in caring for a family member who has a disability. Respite creates greater opportunities for all family members to live actively and participate in community activities and allows parents/guardians time for themselves.

The guiding principles of respiteservices.com are:

  •  To develop a comprehensive respite system in Peel.
  •  To develop and maintain a coherent access process for families of children and adults requiring respite options.
  •  To facilitate respite options for individuals that match their identified needs.

What is a Respite Facilitator?

Respite Facilitators activate provider and family profiles, generate matches through the database, and provide resources to families and providers. They also host respite events that help network providers and families, as well as information events.

Additional Family Information

Peel Respite Providers program is a database of qualified, experienced Providers and families seeking support. Respite providers vary in experience, skill sets, and availability, and should not be considered trained therapists.

respiteservices.com assists with providing parent/caregiver relief, in the family home or in the community by helping network respite providers and families. This may include one to one support in the community or assisting families to implement recommendations made by qualified therapists (e.g. Speech Language Pathologists or Occupational Therapist).

Respite providers are not employees of CDRCO- families accessing the database contract respite providers directly. All providers have submitted a profile outlining their experience, interests and availability, as well as a resume which are reviewed by respite facilitators. Each worker also has a Police Reference Check conducted, and has attended an information session; however, it is an expectation that each family does their own screening.

There is no charge for the use of the database. We cannot guarantee that families will always find the support they require. We strongly encourage caregivers to also recruit their own providers through community schools, churches, libraries and community centres.

Legal Guide to Engaging Support Workers

One of those responsibilities can be the hiring of support workers. In Ontario, individualized, direct funding makes this a possibility. Direct funding gives people more control over their day-to-day lives, where they go, what they do and who supports them to do it.

This makes community more accessible, in ways that are suited to each person. But, dealing with the issues associated with hiring support workers, can be complicated. That is why we created this guide. Community Living Ontario believes in people. We believe in families and we believe in people who choose to make supporting people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities their profession.

We hope this guide helps everyone to sort out the issues associated with these interconnnected realtionships in a way that provides education and help in determining which course is right for you.
